Archive note

This envelope and folded notice were recovered together and are believed to constitute a complete item of domestic correspondence issued by the Order of Magnitude during the mid-1970s.

The exterior carries the marks of Civic Communications Office 31, Harmony House, together with an Order approval stamp and an unusually specific handling instruction: “CONFIDENTIAL CIVIC MATERIAL — HANDLE IN ALIGNMENT.”

The enclosed sheet advises the recipient that:

“The Council has noted a discrepancy in your recent physical arrangement.”

No surviving material presently establishes what constituted a physical arrangement, how such discrepancies were detected, or what form the stated “recalibration” may have taken.

The accompanying instruction that residents whose hands appeared unfamiliar should avoid sudden gestures is not repeated in any other recovered Order material currently held by the archive.

Perhaps more strikingly, the notice concludes by reassuring the recipient that her local sorting office would remain open until 8:30pm.

No explanation is offered for the relevance of this information.

Observations

The document appears to belong to a class of Order material concerned with domestic alignment and structural compliance, although its language is considerably more direct than most surviving public-information notices.

The address format is also unusual. “Residential Unit”, “Quiescent Block” and “Sector 31C” have not yet been independently identified in contemporary Cricklewood records.

Whether these represent genuine administrative subdivisions, internal Order terminology, or some form of parallel civic addressing system remains unresolved.

The handwritten recipient details appear contemporary with the envelope. The initials J.M. beside the routing panel have not been identified.

Catalogue remarks

The postmark gives a precise date of Thursday 15 August 1974, 14:30.

The printed enclosure carries the reference OOM-P17/75. The apparent discrepancy between the 1974 postal date and the /75 document reference has not been explained.

It may indicate a later publication series, a numbering system unrelated to calendar year, or reuse of printed stock.
