Part of the Centaurus group, which also includes M83 and several other galaxies. It is a large galaxy, half a degree in diameter, easily visible in binoculars as a faint glow. This telescope reveals the most prominent dark lane of any galaxy visible in amateur telescopes. The dark lane splits this galaxys bright circular halo into two conspicuous halves. NGC 5128 is a cross between an elliptical and spiral galaxy, which may have been formed by a collision between a large elliptical galaxy and a smaller spiral. Centaurus A is a very strong source of radio emission, and likely contains a 1 billion solar mass black hole at its core.
