The star forming region of NGC 346 (Cataloged as N66) also appears to contain a large population of infant stars. A mere 3 to 5 million years old and not yet burning hydrogen in their cores, the infant stars are scattered about the embedded star cluster. I am unsure as to whether the "striations" seen in the Ha image are outflows (jets) from the star forming regions (
H-H objects?), or if there is some other cause for the apparent difference in luminosity/density. Is there an astronomer in the house?
Ed: Well how about that! Here I am musing about NGC 346 and it appears in the next days
APOD. Not my image of course - nowhere near good enough - but a hubble image, which shows that cluster of young stars very well.
